Dismals Canyon
A walk through Dismals Canyon is particularly rewarding after dark. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot Dismalites, tiny bioluminescent creatures that are found only in a few places in the world. These creatures emit a bluish-green light that attracts flying insects. The best time to see the creatures is late April to May and September to October. If you’re planning to visit during these months, it’s a good idea to reserve a tour at least a week in advance.
Dismals Canyon is located about 1.5 hours from Huntsville and Tupelo. This place is known for its diverse ecosystem, including flora and fauna, rare trees and mosses, as well as waterfalls. This place is one of the best places to visit in Alabama if you’re a nature lover.
This hidden gem is not as famous as its neighbor Dismals National Natural Landmark, but it’s still worth a visit. There’s a 1.5-mile trail that meanders through the gorge’s floor, which offers views of Secret Falls and Rainbow Falls. It’s also possible to try rock climbing here, if you’re feeling adventurous.
You can also camp here. The campgrounds have showers and toilets, and are open seven days a week during the summer. During the rest of the year, they’re only open on weekends, and you’ll need to book in advance. For those looking to stay overnight, the area has two cabins available for rent. A night tour of the canyon can be arranged if you book ahead of time. Keep in mind that the tour can be wet, so dress appropriately.
If you’re interested in hiking, a hike through Dismals Canyon is a great idea. The hike around the canyon’s bottom is relatively easy and involves a few boardwalks and dirt trails. There are also several stepping stones and side areas to explore.
For those looking for a more relaxing trip, try a picnic. You can also stop by the Mill Street Deli, which offers world-famous chicken salad, cheesecakes, and other desserts. And don’t forget to check out Lake Guntersville State Park for a variety of activities.
